The Abyss

"The Abyss" takes an experimental approach to visual narrative, exploring one woman's reality, subconscious, and the blurred realm in-between.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

VIRAG PAZMANY: "The Abyss" was based on my own grief following the sudden death of my mother last year and so the journey making this film has definitely been an emotionally challenging, but therapeutic experience.

I believe that as a creator, when you create something, you should take risks and so we set out to create something powerful and immersive that follows a purely visual narrative, blending the familiar and mundane with the highly abstract.

Another goal of ours, was to use a combination of evocative symbolism, precisely constructed imagery and immersive sound design to induce a trance like state in the viewer, similar to what the protagonist experiences within the film itself.

Although ultimately, despite being very personal to me, I feel that "The Abyss" explores universal themes and feelings that everyone is able to connect with on a deep human level.

CONCEPT

Our primary goal when designing “The Abyss”, was to induce a trance-like meditative state, to enable the viewer to experience the narrative events of the film in a visceral, immersive and abstract way.

We set out to achieve this through a combination of evocative visual symbolism, dense hypnotic sound design and slow methodical pacing.
